This image is a DNA photograph. It was captured as part of the beerDNA series; a collaboration with Maine craft breweries to showcase the beauty of an integral part of what makes each brewery so unique, their yeast. Yeast samples were collected from 16 different Maine breweries, processed in a molecular lab and photographed.

Did you know? Yeast is a critical part of the brewing process in that it ferments the sugars released from grains and converts them to alcohol. Many breweries use different strains of yeast, or propagate their own house strains, adding to the complexity and originality of the beers. Yeast is also an environmental powerhouse. It plays critical roles in ecosystems such as decomposing biological material and degrading environmental pollutants.

Brewer’s Statement: Ringwood Yeast allows us to brew the traditional English-style beers that are the hallmark of our brand.

I like to say that Ringwood Yeast found us.

Our master brewer, Alan Pugsley, learned to brew from micro brewing pioneer Peter Austin, founder of the world-famous Ringwood Brewery in Hampshire, England.  It not for the relationship between Peter and Alan, Shipyard Brewing Company would not be here today.

Alan moved to the United States in the early 80s and quickly became one of the most influential people in the craft brewing movement in North America.  Together, he and Peter have inspired beers and breweries around the world.  Alan has been called the “Johnny Appleseed of Brewing” and Peter was a driving force behind the Small Independent Brewers’ Association and Campaign For Real Ale in England.

Alan continues to shepherd and watch over Ringwood Yeast at our brewery while he inspires young brewers around the world.

I am grateful for the day I met Alan and Ringwood Yeast found us across the Great Pond.  – Fred Forsley
